Notes for Alfred Jack PIERCE |
Alfred has been noted on the Cherokee Indian Roll....He sometimes went by the name of A.J. Pierce so he could own land. If you were an Indian you were not allowed to own land and would have been returned to the reservation.
The homestead was 2 miles south-west of Slagle by the cemetery.
Sarah Elizabeth was one-quarter Osage Indian and her grandmother Scroggins was of Indian Parentage, it is said.
We thank Diane Porter of Toll-house, California (daughter of Beulah Tooley) for the earlier history of the Pierce and Scroggins and Angelina Witts dates and names. She also mentioned that during the Civil War that A.J. Pierce was in the Military of Missouri Militia and his papers have "Alfred" Jack Pierce.
We thank Mrs. Linda Mitchell of Alquerque, N. Mexico (now Mrs. Linda Soros of Utah) June, 2000, for her special help of research and pictures as her grandmother Sarah Ethel Johnson was raised by Ben & Matila Perryman. She donated pictures of Ben & Matila Perryman and their two sons Tom and Toss, and her grandmother Sarah Ethel. |
