Notes for Nathan WITT
The earliest known record of the Witt family in Polk County, MO is that Nathan Witt obtained title to a tract of land, containing eighty acres, from the United States of America by Pre-emption Certificate No. 639, April 10, 1843.
Will dated August 6, 1843. Wife (name not given). AT her death, all my children by her, to wit: John H. Witt, James Allen Witt, William Witt, Angelina Witt, Margaret Jane Witt, Louisa Witt, Mariah Witt, Caleb Witt. To eldest son, Milton Witt $1.00, and "should my deceased father's will be broke that has willed to my son Milton Witt $150 & some property, than I will him $50, which is to be paid out of amount arising from my father's estate." Wit: Benj M Jewett, John M Clark, William Lunceford. Filed for probate Sept 5, 1843.

Nathan and Nancy were both born in Kentucky. They were married there also and moved to Missouri a short time later. According to the 1850 census, Milton Witt was twenty six years old, maksing him born about 1824. Since we know that Nancy and Nathan were married in 1827 according to a D.A.R record, either there is an error in a record or Milton was Nathan's son by a previous marriage.
Nathan Witt died just a few months after obtaining title to his farm, leaving Nancy with nine children, ranging from an infant to age nineteen.
Nathan and Nancy, along with other family members, were buried on the family farm. A subsequent owner explained the cemetary has been bulldozed, so its location can no longer be ascertained.
